Having fallen in love with working with metal in the UK film industry in 1997, Mel set up her home studio, called Forging Ahead in Hurstbridge in 2013.
Her specialty is in custom made garden sculpture, mirrors and 3 dimensional wall arts. She also has a retail range available for purchase at her studio.
Mel's love of the way metal can be bent, rolled and folded stems from the fact that something of such strength can be manipulated into something of such beauty. She enjoys working with hundreds or even thousands of pieces to make large scale sculptures.
When Mel is working with hammer and forge, fire and steel she loves nothing more than recreating found objects into natural shapes, like leaves, ferns, feathers and animals.
Mel is a participant of Nillumbik Artist Open Studios and a member of the Association of Sculptors Victoria. She won the Peoples Choice Award for Sculpture at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2018 for her piece 'Weeping Beauty'. This sculpture is now in a private collection in Hawthorn.
She is credited on the film 'Saving Private Ryan' for her work in Special Effects.
You can walk to her studio from Hurstbridge railway station along walking paths. Or you can drive to her studio only 1.5km from Hurstbridge post office.
The studio is usually open 4 days a week, but can be closed when out on deliveries or events are on. Please phone or text to confirm the studio is open.
