Take a drive to the end of Steels Creek road and follow the signs to the smallest winery in the Yarra Valley, Steels Creek Estate. Simon established his vineyard in this tranquil setting in 1981 planting every vine by hand and in that tradition we still do almost every task in the vineyard ourselves by hand. We hand pick our fruit and make and bottle all the wine on site, so naturally all our wines are single vineyard, estate wines. Our wine making area is visible from the tasting area so if we are up to anything you will know and we welcome your questions about the process.
We have 5 grape varieties planted on our tiny 5 acre vineyard, each lovingly made into a straight varietal wine. Our wine making philosophy is mainly to use wild ferments and hand plunging with minimal intervention. We use no filtering or fining for our red wines and all our wines are free of any animal products.
We have Yarra Valley’s only Colombard, a crisp and refreshing white wine, barrel fermented Chardonnay, cassis driven Cabernet Sauvignon, cool climate Shiraz and an alluring Cabernet Franc. From time to time we may even have a Blanc de Blanc sparkling, but given the amount of time and money dedicated to make this wine on such a small scale we don’t always share it.
Friday 2pm till 6pm, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Public Holidays 10am till 6pm. Visitors are welcome to picnic under the gum tree.
