Yarra Valley Opera Festival: October 12th - 21st 2018

Gertrude Opera is delighted to announce the inaugural Yarra Valley Opera Festival, to be held in Regional Victoria from October 12th – 21st 2018.

Over the course of ten days, Gertrude Opera’s Yarra Valley Opera Festival will deliver a world-class feast of festival opera and satellite events for all tastes. The Festival will feature our home-grown Diva, Stacey Alleaume (soprano) as Special Guest Artist, with appearances by Maestro Brian Castles-Onion (conductor, Opera Australia), Max Gillies AM, and Writer/Actor Michael Veitch, as well as an array of professional and young artists from Australia and overseas.

In the heartland of Dame Nellie Melba, local, international and emerging artistic excellence will present traditional and contemporary opera, a Gala Opening Concert, and satellite events.

Linda Thompson, Artistic Director and Founder of the Gertrude Opera and the Yarra Valley Opera Festival, has designed a unique and enticing ten-day program.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE (Australian Premiere)
by Danish composer Poul Ruders, featuring ABC-TV Operatunity star Emily Burke as Aunt Lydia, and winner of the German Australian Opera Grant, Celeste Howarth as Offred.

OPENING GALA CONCERT led by Conductor of Handa Opera on Sydney             Harbour, Maestro Brian Castles-Onion AM, with the Stars of the Festival - in the spotlight is Melbourne Diva and Opera Australia star Stacey Alleaume, in a program of exquisite opera hits and rarities.

LA LA LA TRIVIATA - An Opera Trivia Dinner, hosted by MICHAEL VEITCH featuring live examples and a range of prizes, held at De Bortoli Locale Restaurant.

A TALE OF TWO DIVAS - starring MAX GILLIES - Mozart’s The Impresario meets ‘The Producers’ - an imaginary glimpse into the relationship between Dame Nellie Melba and her protégée, Miss Gertrude Johnson

THE ELIXIR OF LOVE (Donizetti) -with rising stars of Gertrude Opera and a combined Yarra Valley - Dandenong Ranges community chorus

COSI FAN TUTTE (Mozart) a sublime comedy about fidelity and the nature of love, directed by Australia legendary star of stage and screen, GERALDINE TURNER. Making her conducting debut, rising star MS TIANYI LU, Assistant Conductor to Sir Andrew Davis at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with internationally acclaimed Australian soprano Alison Rae Jones is the been-there, done-that darling Despina.

The Yarra Valley Opera Festival will showcase Australian and international opera talent, with all operas sung in English. Our principal venue partner is OLINDA YARRA AT YERING, the owners kindly opening their historic private property to allow for a celebration of the joys of singing, theatre, story-telling, socialising, eating and drinking.
