Yering Farm is steeped in history, for its location and for the wines this site was originally know for. It is located on the original site of the Yeringa Vineyards once owned by the Deschamps family back in the 1800s.
As fifth generation Orchardists, the Johns family purchased the property in 1980, planting a 200-acre apple, pear and stone fruit orchard. After researching the history of the area and the property, son Alan Johns began the planting of the now 30-acre vineyard in 1989 and, to this day, all Yering Farm wines are still produced on-site from estate grown fruit. From budburst to bottling, every stage of production is personally controlled by winemaker and owner Alan, with the help of his sons. The main varieties grown are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, with a little Shiraz, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc also growing. To ensure that the highest quality wines are achieved, only 6,000 cases of wine are produced each year, and are only found from the on-site cellar door or around select Melbourne restaurants, bars and theatres.
In 2000, the old hay shed was transformed into the charming Cellar Door that you can visit today, complete with the original 'Yeringa Vineyard' sign adorning the entrance. The whole property exudes rustic charm with commanding views of the Yarra Valley; perfect to linger with a bottle of wine and the Yering Farm 'Pruner's Platter' by the fire or out on the large verandah enjoying the views (bookings essential).
Tapping in to his background of being a fifth generation orchardist, Alan now also creates an exceptional apple cider, using the apples still grown in the original orchard. Made with fresh Pink Lady apples, this 'syder' is not to be missed!
The most recent addition to Yering Farm is the luxurious self-contained farmhouse known as 'The George at Yering', This seven bedroom home is set idyllically amongst the 70 acre orchard and is within a short walk to the Cellar door. The perfect retreat for families, weekend getaways and wedding groups.
