The School Holidays are upon us and whether you’re looking for the perfect activity for young explorers, crafty culture kids or outdoorsy youngsters we’ve got you covered.

Get into adventure mode and head to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges for these events the whole family can get on board with:


1. Crafty Kids 

Follow the “Eye Spy” trail through the National Photographic Portrait Prize, draw your own silhouette portrait or take your photo in the pop-up photo booth and frame it in your own decorated photo frame. Visit the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum to explore free craft activities for children aged six and above. Find out more

Think art play - but outside! Pack a picnic basket full of craft supplies and lunch goodies to enjoy in the fresh open air. Head to Lilydale Lake Playground for a day full of adventure. Looking for some crafty inspo? Why not try kite making, bubble fun, galaxy glitter slime making, nature illustrations and watercolours or super long paper chains.

Lillydale Lake is open at all times and has a range of facilities and activities to suit everyone, including an all-abilities playground, walking tracks, jetties, BBQ’s, picnic shelters, sandy beach areas and public toilets. 2. Tasty Kids

Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery present their school holiday program of Choco-Licious Junior Chocolatier Classes. Kids aged six to twelve of age can join a 45-minute hands-on class in the parents' free zone, learning to make their very own chocolate creations with their European Chocolatiers. Pick Mandarins and Monkey Fruits at Rayners Orchard

Looking for something different to do over the school holidays? Throw on a warm jacket and some sturdy shoes and visit Rayner's Orchard, a unique farm in the Yarra Valley that grows over 450 varieties of fruit. Plus - you’ll learn what a Monkey Fruit actually is!

Fruit Tasting Tractor Tours run daily on demand between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, sample seasonal fruits as you make your way around the farm in a comfy covered trailer, learning things about the fruits that you already know, and discovering new fruits that you have never tasted before.

3. Burn the energy kids!

Explore 20 beautiful acres of stimulating, fun-filled activities to suit all ages. Hedgend Maze offers a creative environment that stimulates fun, creative thinking and shared memories. Find out more

Meet some iconic Australian animals like Koalas, Kangaroos, Platypus, Dingoes, Wombats and Emus. Healesville Sanctuary is also home to the Australian Wildlife Centre, a hospital which treats more than 2000 sick and injured native animals every year and is an important training centre for wildlife veterinarians. The Junior Sprint X and Lake Mountain Mini Series 1 (0.5 kilometres, 1.5 kilometres or 2.5 kilometres) is a great way to introduce young skiers to not so serious grassroots racing. It provides an excellent opportunity for families to come along and enjoy these fun events. Find out more.

4. Culture Kids

Whitehorse Orchestra Children’s concert presents the Pied Piper of Hamlyn. Don’t miss this entertaining and accessible introduction to the orchestra, complete with music, songs, storyline, narrators, characters in costume and wonderful video imagery.

Recent research points to the authenticity of this age-old story; only the children were the young adults of Hamlyn and the Pied Piper, a government agent spruiking the benefits of the new land deals of the time. Find out more

Offering a large range breakfast, lunch, snack and early dinner options seven days a week, for dining in and takeaway, Beechworth Bakery is an excellent spot for families. The Bakery is also the place people come to come to with friends or just enjoy some alone time.

The Yarra Valley is a mecca for those that love a market. With a mix of craft, food and night markets there is something on every weekend somewhere. St Andrews holds the iconic Saturday market weekly, the organic market in Healesville is each Saturday morning, the Upper Yarra has a market on every weekend, and Yarra Glen is host to the Craft Market at the Racecourse
