You know that feeling of discovering a great bakery! From the moment you walk through the door your taste buds are tantalised by the aromas of fresh baked bread, delectable pastries, patisserie treats and triumphant sausage rolls. From the staples of life, to the special treats that make us feel sooooo good, a great bakery find can become a morning rite of passage or a reason to create a whole weekend around a visit. Just add a perfectly brewed coffee!

Make one of these bakeries your new ‘local’ – you’ll drive any distance for one of their house baked, totally indulgent, deliciously flakey, chooclatley yumminess. Sweet, savoury and so moreish.

These are the best…ever.

Proserpina, Sassafras

It begins with stone ground flour on the premises and ends with a display case that will make you swoon. Satisfaction guaranteed and a gorgeous setting for all seasons. So much care goes into the food here, and it shows.

A Local Baker, St Andrews

Wholesome goodness and a touch of French bagguetry! Artisan breads all the way with handmade bakery items begging to go home with you (if you can wait that long). Eating from a brown paper bag never had it so good. The croissants and tarts are especially good at A Local Baker.

Wombat’s Chai – Fruition, Healesville

Wombat's Chai is an intimate café that greets  you with a smile as you enter Healesville and is a secret many try to keep. In addition to a delightful ‘dessert’ style menu that brims with homebaked cakes and goodness, you’ll be able to pick up a loaf of the super popular artisan bread made by Fruition. Try the fruit bread too this time! And of course the chai, that goes without saying.

The Piggery Café, Burnham Beeches, Sherbrooke

A rustic setting with a focus on sustainability, The Piggery is a whole experience. Go the whole hog (yes, we jest) and enjoy the bakery produce (all prepared with Biodynamic flour and local ingredients where possible) in between a round of bocce on the lawn. If you’re in search of the perfect doughnut, the perfect escargot, the perfect short pastry, you’re seriously going to have your finest hour working through this menu!

Habituel, Healesville

Habituel is your go-to for some of the best coffee in town (roasted onsite no less) and the impossible task of choosing from a delicious array of artisan breads and pastries. The chocolate filled croissant is one of the best there is, and a filled baguette makes for a satisfying lunch.  Take a loaf home if your dare!

The Providore @ Meletos, Coldstream

So much to love at The Providore. Their beautiful sourdough bread is baked on the premises and will be in your shopping basket before you can say ‘add some French provincial butter and fresh goats cheese please’. You may never want to leave.

Markets galore

Every weekend there’s a market on somewhere in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges and farmers just love to share their freshest, just picked produce. If you’re particularly after artisan bread start with the Eltham Farmers Market or Healesville Market. Guaranteed to be baked that day and in your hands directly from the baker – you can’t get fresher than that.
