The vista from the dining room overlooks the stunning rolling hills of the Yarra Valley. The property has been many things in its lifetime (Fondata means ‘Founded’ and the main homestead was built in 1872), but it seems to have found its perfect expression as a modern country Italian restaurant with city style and country hospitality. The homestead was once the major stop for Cobb & Co. taking supplies to the Goldfields. Now we are a much loved destination for Italian food and beverage!

We have been taken to heart by the local Italian community and regularly host large family events. People of Italian heritage, and those who simply love the flavours and feel of Italian culture, all find their ‘home’ here. We love that feeling of the extended family celebrating an event, and then seeing family members return for a more intimate meal, or the next big family dinner! We see the same families for engagements, weddings, christening, birthdays, anniversaries and farewells – life celebrations! Our menu, created by chef Christopher Lillico is modern, rustic, and produce driven, and features dishes made in the traditional way. I think that it reminds many Italians of ‘back home’.

During Ciao Yarra Valley Ciao, we will do what we do best – hallmark Italian dishes made in the style of Nonna and full of local flavour. Primi, secondi and dolci – the perfect trio! Ask any Italian – mastering the perfect Tiramisu or pasta can take years of practice and a few ‘secrets’ too. Our 12-hour slow cooked lamb is one of those dishes you may remember forever, and it’s a recipe that’s been refined for almost as long!

Fondata 1872 is a hearty, friendly, dining experience that embraces you in an Italian way of life – so much more than a meal! ‘Festeggia con noi’ – Feast with us.
