Not only has the Portet family been making wine for ten generations, but their beginnings were at Chateau Lafite in Bordeaux, which provided them with a wine philosophy lesson like no other.
It all started when Dominique would pedal his bike through the vineyards of the Medoc, and his Father André would shoo his young son out of the chateau cellar, encouraging an adventurous life behind those gravely banks. Making his way to California’s Napa Valley (graduating Dux of Oenology, Montpellier University), Dominique began to craft wines with his brother Bernard. However, much like the environment he was soon to encounter, Dominique hopped a little further, searching for vineyards to rival France.
The soil, the sun, the landscape, the people, the freedom, the culture – in Australia Dominique found his dream. The young Frenchman was hooked on his new discovery and decades of fine wine has followed. Australia is home, now in his blood and that of his sons.
Today with tenth generation winemaker Ben Portet guiding the family craft in the winery, he is maintaining its place deeply seated in Australian soil but with respect for the combined experiences of his forbears.
Dominique Portet specialises in sparkling wine, sauvignon blanc, rosé, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.
The cellar door has a French country feel, and the terrace café serves light foods from the winemaker’s table, with great views of the ranges. They also sell La Boutique French-style products. Wine quality is exemplary across the board, and the serene surround landscape is the Yarra Valley at its best.
